First and Goal Mel is a retired Dept of Defense employee and moved to Ocala in 2000. He has been carving stone since 2004. His interest in stone sculpture was the result of attending an OAG exhibition that year. After talking with George Hanover, Mel was convinced to give sculpture a try; George has been Mel's mentor ever since. Mel likes the challenge of producing a finished product that yields fluid motion and/or dramatic movement; these characteristics are not natural in this heavy medium. Hopefully, he motivates the viewer to muse beyond the obvious image while searching for some deeper psychological twist hidden in his sculpture. Mel's favorite artists are Picasso, Dali, and Rene Magritte. He is particularly impressed with the work of contemporary sculptor Dale Enochs, who works primarily in Indiana limestone. Mel always enjoys participating in OAG shows and appreciates the kind words of encouragement from George and other members who have seen his work. |
